All creatives need a sandbox to play in. In Kansas City, this sandbox can be found in one giant warehouse where Hammerspace resides. KC Loves™ took a tour of the facilities and asked them about their creative inspiration. We can’t wait to get our memberships and just go make stuff.
KC Loves: How does KC benefit from a place like Hammerspace?
Hammerspace: Artists and crafters, hobbyists and inventors all need tools, space, resources and community to thrive. We provide the tools, space, resources and community, and our members provide the creativity.
KC Loves: Why KC?
Hammerspace: We were all born and bred here in KC. Barbacue sauce flows in our veins. We couldn’t imagine working anywhere but the heart of the Digital Prairie: the Paris of the midwest.
KC Loves: Can you talk about some of the creativity that’s come out of Hammerspace?
Hammerspace: We build and help others to build some amazing and one of a kind projects. We’ve made Starship Bridge simulators and wall mounted bacon dispensers, Brawndo drinking fountains and Fortune-telling robots. Our members have crafted go-carts that resemble vintage nuclear bombs, and Captain America shields made of bulletproof titanium. We’ve helped local companies develop electronics that monitor barbecues and beehives. ONI Technology, a 3D printer company, manufactures all their printers here at the space. Dozens of other small businesses manufacture some or all of their products here at Hammerspace.
KC Loves: Can you talk about the size and sheer magnitude of your space?
Hammerspace: We have over 17,000 sqft of workshop and classroom space with all the wood, metal, and plastic working tools anyone could need to build almost anything. From black smithing and 3D printing, to screen printing or robotic fabrication.
KC Loves: How many people are members?
Hammerspace: About 100 at any given moment.
KC Loves: What do you love about the members?
Hammerspace: Our members are always exploring and creating. It is a privilege to help them bring their imagination into reality.
KC Loves: If others want to check it out, is there an open house?
Hammerspace: We have an open house every Thursday from 6pm-9pm.
